What are cognitive assessments?
A cognitive assessment is often referred to as an intelligence or IQ test and is a series of tests and procedures designed to measure a person’s overall thinking skills, reasoning abilities, and problem-solving capacity. For adults and children, intelligence testing provides valuable insight into different areas of cognitive development highlighting strengths and areas for development with tailored strategies to enhance areas of weaknesses which can support with improved learning and performance.

Who might benefit from a cognitive assessment?
A cognitive assessment isn’t just for those struggling, anyone can benefit from understanding their current cognitive abilities. Many high-performing professionals choose testing to gain insight into their strengths, optimise performance, and enhance focus at work.
For children and adolescents, cognitive testing can be especially valuable if there are concerns about learning, memory, attention, or processing speed, as results can guide tailored support in school and at home. Cognitive assessments can be used as valuable evidence to support an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) application.
Adults may also find assessment helpful when facing challenges linked to stress, ageing, neurological changes, or simply to better understand how their mind works.
What are the types of cognitive assessments?Which tools do you use?
Though there are a range of different types of cognitive assessment tools and assessment batteries, at Regal Private Therapy Practice we use internationally recognised gold-standard measures: The Wechsler Intelligence Scale (WAIS) for adults and the WISC for children and adolescents. These assessments are thoroughly researched, reliable, and have been validated over several decades and are the most widely recognised, used and trusted.
Cognitive assessments for children & adolescents
The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC)
The WISC is the gold-standard cognitive assessment for children and adolescents aged 6 to 16 years and includes a set of verbal and performance based tasks in clinic. Adolescents 16+ complete the WAIS. It provides a detailed picture of a young person’s cognitive strengths and challenges across several key areas:
-
Understanding, using and reasoning with language.
-
Analysing and interpreting visual information.
-
Solving novel problems and identifying patterns.
-
Holding and manipulating information in the mind.
-
How quickly and accurately information can be processed.
Results can highlight areas that may impact school performance, learning style, and day-to-day functioning. A WISC assessment helps parents and teachers understand how a child learns best, supports applications for additional educational support if needed, and provides a developmental baseline for future progress.
Cognitive assessments for adults
The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS)
The WAIS is the most widely used assessment of cognitive ability for adults and older adolescents (ages 16+). Like the WISC, it offers a comprehensive evaluation of intellectual functioning across the same domains.
