Child and adolescent therapy at Regal Private Therapy Practice
Expert psychological support for young people in central London and online
At Regal Private Therapy Practice, we believe that every child and teenager deserves to feel secure, supported and confident as they grow. Just as physical health is vital, so too is emotional wellbeing. Good mental health in childhood and adolescence lays the foundation for confidence, self-esteem and strong relationships throughout life.
Our private child and adolescent therapy in London offers a safe, confidential space for young people to explore their feelings, make sense of challenges and build the tools they need to thrive.
Why choose therapy for your child or teenager?
Children and young people can face unique pressures as they grow. Life changes such as parental separation, moving school, or exam pressure can sometimes feel overwhelming for a child or teenager. While many difficulties naturally ease with time, others may linger and begin to affect confidence, mood, or behaviour. In these moments, seeking qualified, specialist support ensures your child has the tools they need to feel understood and supported.
Children and teenagers don’t always have the words or life experience to explain what’s going on inside. That’s why therapy, together with the care of parents and families, can be so valuable, offering a space where emotions can be explored safely and resilience can be built for the future.
Common risk factors for poor mental health in children and adolescents?
There is no single cause of poor mental health in children or teenagers. Instead, a combination of biological, psychological and social factors can influence a young person’s psychological wellbeing. Each child is unique, but certain life challenges can increase the risk of difficulties with mood, anxiety, or behaviour.

How do I know if my child or teenager needs professional help?
It can be difficult for parents to know when everyday worries have become something more. Signs that your child or teenager may benefit from seeing a private Child Psychologist may include some of the following:
Persistent anxiety, feelings of sadness or low motivation that is increasing in frequency and severity. Behavioural changes such as being more irritable, reduction in hobbies previously enjoyed, avoiding going certain places or withdrawal from friends or family, changes in sleep or appetite. They may start to struggle at school either academically or socially which does not seem to improve with time. The difficulties are beginning to impact on the child or teenager’s quality of life or family dynamics.
Research shows that seeking professional support early is key, as timely intervention can reduce distress, prevent problems from worsening and help children and teenagers develop confidence and resilience for the future.
Regal’s family friendly approach
Parents and caregivers know their children best, and often sense when something feels different. Parents are the experts of their children and we respect parent’s knowledge of their children while offering additional expertise to support the child’s journey. At Regal, our specialist child and adolescent psychologists in the Harley Street district work in partnership with families, providing early support that can build resilience, restore confidence, help young people feel more in control of their emotions to be able to thrive and focus on what is important to them in life.
Are parents involved in their child or adolescent’s therapy?
At Regal Private Therapy Practice, our goal is always to help children and teenagers feel better as quickly and effectively as possible. To achieve this, we draw on the latest research, clinical evidence, and gold-standard approaches in child and adolescent psychology. We work with young people aged six years and above, and parental involvement is often a crucial part of this process. The level of parent involvement depends on the age, developmental stage, and preferences of the young person.
Adolescents
For secondary school aged young people, therapy sessions are usually attended independently, though we advise parent contact with the therapist to ensure consistency and progress. This may involve a parent joining the final 10 minutes of each session, or scheduled check-ins, or the inclusion of some joint sessions, depending on each family’s needs. This is because young people often need their parents’ support to practice strategies at home, reinforce progress between sessions and feel reassured when facing challenges.
Children
With younger children, especially those of primary school age, research shows that heavy involvement of parents directly in therapy is one of the most effective ways to create lasting change. For this reason, depending on the child’s difficulties, therapy for younger children, may be more parent-led, meaning the parent working with the Clinical Psychologist with some sessions being joint with the child and parent. This aims to empower both the child and family.
At Regal, we tailor the balance of child and parent involvement carefully, ensuring therapy feels collaborative, supportive, and evidence-based, so every young person has the best chance to thrive.
